TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Tuesday, November 28, 2023) – Sophomore guard Heaven Samayoa-Mathis has been named Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Week. SWAC officials announced the honors on Monday, November 27.
The first-year Bruin earned recognition, leading the Bruins to a 1-1 record in the 2023 SLCC Thanksgiving Classic.
Samayoa-Mathis stuffed the box score with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and five steals in a 65-55 win over Eastern Wyoming to open the tournament.
The following afternoon, Samayoa-Mathis sparked a Bruins fourth-quarter rally against No. 22 Odessa. A trio of threes in the final period from Samayoa-Mathis put Salt Lake in position for a potential upset. Despite falling short in the 80-78 loss, she made 8-of-11 shots and 6-of-7 from three-point land, finishing with 23 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Samayoa-Mathis averaged 19 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game in the Thanksgiving Classic.
The sophomore from Sacramento, California is averaging a team-high 13.4 points per game this season in 30.6 minutes per game. Not limited to being just a scorer, the 5'7 point guard has grabbed 3.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and a steal per game in eight starts this season.
Samayoa-Mathis averaged 8.5 points, 3.7 rebounds on 34.9 percent shooting, and 30.8 percent from deep as a freshman with the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Vulcans
