TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 28, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team continued its streak of Scenic West Athletic Conference titles last week, stretching their record to six-consecutive titles they've won outright or shared.
With that accomplishment in the rear-view mirror, the Bruins are now pushing towards another goal - continuing their streak of Region 18 championships and appearances in the NJCAA tourney. SLCC is attempting to earn its third-consecutive Region 18 championship this week, along with earning its sixth-straight berth into the NJCAA championships. The chance to continue those streaks will begin on Friday in Price as top-seeded Salt Lake faces off against the winner of a play-in game between host USU Eastern and Colorado Northwestern.Â
The chance to continue the streaks is important to the program but Salt Lake is focused on the simple act of winning games in this region tournament, according to Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer.
"There's really not much to say except we have to play hard, make some shots, and try to win two games," she said. "The conference was super balanced this season, which should make for a really competitive tournament."
Salt Lake will undoubtedly have the advantage regardless of its opponent Friday. The Bruins went 3-0 against both USU Eastern and Colorado Northwestern, earning double-digit victories in all six wins. SLCC beat the Eagles 63-53 in their only game in Price, part of their 9-3 mark in the Scenic West. Likewise, USU Eastern was 3-0 against CNCC during the regular season.
The winner of the SLCC semifinal will play the winner of a matchup between Snow College and Southern Idaho in the Region 18 championship game on Saturday. Snow went 2-1 against the Golden Eagles during the regular season.Â
The Region 18 semifinal featuring Salt Lake will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Region 18 championship game will be played at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Full coverage of the Region 18 tournament can be found on the Scenic West Athletic Conference website at scenicwestsports.com.Â
