No. 5 SLCC Women's Soccer opens Region 18 tourney as top seed Friday

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 31, 2019) – The No. 5 Salt Lake Community College women's soccer team knows how to win a Region 18 championship but the Bruins haven't yet had the pressure of defending a Region 18 championship. The goal is the same, but does the pressure change?

That is what Salt Lake will find out this week as the program hosts the Region 18 championships for the second consecutive season. Last year, it was the Bruins who earned a Region 18 title match victory to advance to the NJCAA District One championship, where the team lost to Paradise Valley. This season, Salt Lake is hoping to climb much farther but the goals can happen if the program starts the postseason with energy, according to SLCC coach Mark Davis.

"We are excited for the upcoming week as some of our starters who have been sitting out due to injury are back and even healthier than before," he said. "Both teams had a great week of trainings last week and are hungry for the region tournament. Having a week off has allowed us to prepare for these two games. The staff and the players have said we take every day one day a time.

"This week off has brought us closer than before and our culture is in a great place. Both programs are dialed in and focused."

SLCC will open the Region 18 championships at Zions Bank Stadium on Friday against USU Eastern. The Bruins earned wins against the Eagles on both occasions this season, outscoring the team 6-2 in their two matchups. If Salt Lake prevails, the team will face either Snow College or Southern Nevada in the championship match on Saturday. SLCC previously had a 0-0 tie against Snow earlier in the season.

Salt Lake will face off against USU Eastern at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. If the Bruins prevail, they will play for the Region 18 championship at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. All of the matches will be contested at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.
