Season starts for No. 15 SLCC Women's Basketball Friday

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 30, 2019) - The No. 15 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team will open its 2019-20 campaign Friday, beginning a new chapter in a nationally-acclaimed book.

The Bruins had a successful training camp, developing a number of players into a roster that will still include several performers from last year's Region 18 championship squad. SLCC will see how this year's roster performs against external competition as the team travels to play in a tournament hosted by Western Wyoming Community College, in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Salt Lake coach Marcilina Grayer said her team is excited to use the lessons it learned in preseason camp.

"Training camp has had its bumps with light injuries but we have been focused on keeping everyone healthy," she said. "I'm very happy with the progress that the team has made thus far."

SLCC will open its season Friday with a matchup against Central Wyoming College, followed up by a Saturday game against host Western Wyoming. Central Wyoming finished at 10-20 in the 2018-19 season and will begin its second season under coach Lindsey Fearing. Western Wyoming is a longtime preseason opponent of Salt Lake's due to the proximity. The Mustangs finished at 5-24 last season, including two losses to the Bruins.

Grayer said energy is what she's expecting from her team this upcoming weekend.

"We are expecting our team to give maximum effort while being great teammates and supporting one another," she said.

Salt Lake will face Western Wyoming at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. After this weekend, the Bruins are scheduled to play a tournament in New Mexico on November 15-16.
