TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 3, 2018) - Throughout most of SLCC women's basketball coach Betsy Specketer's tenure, the Bruins have entered the Scenic West Athletic Conference with a full head of steam.

The 2018-19 season is no different, as the No. 15 Bruins will enter their conference opener on Saturday with a 14-2 record and a strong performance in a recent tournament in Las Vegas. SLCC's winning streak, not including an impressive performance in a scrimmage Saturday, is up to 10 games, with the Bruins hoping to extend the streak this weekend at longtime regional rival Southern Idaho.

Specketer said her team is focused and prepared entering league play.

"We're really excited to start league play and are looking forward to building on last weekend's success," she said. "Southern Idaho is always a tough matchup; especially on their home court, where they feed off the energy and enthusiasm of their crowd."

The Golden Eagles have started league play in their usual impressive fashion, thanks to an 11-5 start that included a 7-game winning streak. CSI is led by Mallory Lapoole, who is averaging 11.9 points for the Golden Eagles. Southern Idaho fell last weekend to Central Arizona, 71-64; Salt Lake defeated Central Arizona twice in the preseason, with both wins featuring strong margins.

With Salt Lake holding a 10-2 record on road-or-neutral courts this season, Specketer said her team will simply try to focus on fundamentals in the league opener.

"Controlling the (game's) tempo, taking care of the basketball, and keeping (Southern Idaho) out of their transition offense will definitely be keys to stealing a road win," she said. 

The game against Southern Idaho will tip at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Salt Lake's Scenic West home opener will take place on Jan. 12, as the Bruins host in-state rival Snow College inside the Lifetime Activities Center.
