TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 29, 2019) - Things were going along quite well for the No. 15 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team, with the Bruins riding high on a four-game winning streak entering last Saturday's matchup at Snow College.
What happened at Snow is something Salt Lake would like to move past this week, as the Bruins fell 71-52 in a game that was marred by rare offensive inefficiencies. Entering this week's matchups against USU Eastern and Southern Idaho, SLCC is prepared to get back to what made them successful during their various winning streaks earlier this season.
"Our defense has been rock solid all year but we really struggled to get stops at Snow," said Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer. "(Snow) just shot lights out but part of their success was due to our defensive lapses."
Salt Lake won't be able to afford many defensive lapses this weekend, especially facing the league's highest scoring offenses in Southern Idaho and USU Eastern. In league statistics through last weekend, the Golden Eagles are averaging 74.9 points a game and USU Eastern rides right behind at 69.7 points.Â
Thursday's game will be played at USU Eastern, with the Eagles entering the matchup on a victory after downing Colorado Northwestern in impressive fashion. When CSI enters the Lifetime Activities Center for Saturday's game, they will be doing the same. Salt Lake fell to CSI in the league opener, 62-60, but beat USU Eastern, 72-52, in an earlier matchup.Â
As far as Scenic West Athletic Conference standings are concerned, Salt Lake and Snow College still sit at the top of the league at 4-2. The in-state programs split their two matchups, with the rubber game coming on February 16 inside the Lifetime Activities Center.Â
Specketer said that much is riding on the upcoming games for Salt Lake.
"We'll have to do a much better job of guarding people on Thursday at USU Eastern and then again on Saturday against Southern Idaho," she said.
Thursday's game will start at 5:30 in Price, while Saturday's home game against Southern Idaho is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.Â
