Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 12, 2019) - No program in America was more excited about experiencing home-cooking than the No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team.
The Bruins, who haven't played at home since December 8, were hoping to continue a Scenic West Athletic Conference winning streak against in-state rival Snow College. Salt Lake succeeded in that goal, earning a 71-64 overtime win over the visiting Badgers to move to 16-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
An impressive performance by
Lauren Gustin told the story for Salt Lake, as the freshman from Salem Hills scored 40 points with 22 rebounds to help SLCC to the victory. Gustin continued her streak of double-digit scoring performances by upping the mark to five games, posting her career high in Bruin blue.
The game between the longtime in-state rivals was back-and-forth, with Salt Lake taking a 17-11 lead after the first quarter. However, Snow overcame a Bruins halftime lead, outscoring Salt Lake 42-34 in the second half to send the game to overtime.
Hazel Fui hit a three-point shot early in the overtime period, setting the tone for SLCC to outscore Snow 9-2 in extra time.
"Give credit to Snow, they never gave up and made some big plays down the stretch," said Bruins coach Betsy Specketer. "I was really proud of our team in how we took control in the overtime. We stayed composed and executed on both ends to secure the win."
In spite of leading the game for 42:10, Salt Lake never led by more than 13 points, with Snow taking a brief lead late in the fourth quarter at 60-59. The Bruins were able to help maintain an edge in the game thanks to rebounding, specifically their 15-6 edge in offensive rebounds.
Miki'ala Maio was Salt Lake's other double-digit scorer, finishing with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Fui finished with 8 points, while
Laura Pichot scored 7 points.
The Bruins will continue with a three-game homestand next week, playing games against in-state rival USU Eastern Thursday.
