Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 19, 2018) - The No. 9 Salt Lake Community College Bruins were hoping for a long week at the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.
Instead, the Bruins were caught off guard by a scrappy No. 24 ASA Brooklyn squad, falling in heartbreaking fashion in the opening round of the NJCAA tourney, 60-59. ASA Brooklyn outscored SLCC 16-8 in the final period, netting a Troyian Brooks layup with four seconds left in the game.
SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer said the loss was tough for her squad, which finished the season at 26-6.
"I'm sorry to see a great year end," she said. "We didn't play at our best and when you get to this level, you need your best effort."
Salt Lake trailed 34-30 at halftime before rolling to a 21-10 advantage in the third quarter, securing a 51-44 lead heading to the final period. The turnover bug repeatedly struck the Bruins throughout the game, with SLCC committing 16 turnovers compared to ASA Brooklyn's 8 turnovers. Salt Lake's turnovers turned into 20 points for ASA Brooklyn.
SLCC held a lead for much of the fourth quarter until Brooks's layup, leading by three - 59-56 with 42 seconds remaining - after Jamaica Martin hit a pair of free throws. The Bruins shot just 38 percent from the floor (19-of-50).
"We had lots of chances in the fourth quarter to pull away and we let (ASA Brooklyn) stay in it," Specketer said. "They made plays down the stretch and we didn't."
Tia Hay closed out her career in Bruin blue with 12 points, a feat equaled by
Rian Rawlings. Emma Villas finished with 10 points for Salt Lake.
