Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 1, 2018) - The No. 9 Salt Lake Community College Bruins have been stewing for nearly a month about their lone Scenic West Athletic Conference loss.
Earlier in January, SLCC fell at home to Southern Idaho, proving to be its only loss in a 4-1 start to conference play. The Bruins avenged the January loss in style to start the month of February, earning a 68-58 win over the Golden Eagles.
The Bruins held a 26-24 halftime lead but made the biggest gains in the third quarter, outscoring CSI 21-11 to take a commanding lead into the fourth quarter. While its lead may not have reached deep, Salt Lake controlled the game through defense as they limited the Golden Eagles to a shooting percentage of 28.3 percent (17-of-60). Thanks to their strong defense, the Bruins shot 55.3 percent from the field (26-of-47).
"Tonight was a great defensive effort and we shot the ball really well," said SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer. "It was impressive coming against one of the league's top teams."
SLCC guard
Tia Hay led the Bruins in scoring once again, finishing with 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
Miki'ala Maio scored 21 points for the Bruins, while
Kimauri Toia finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Toia is the reigning SWAC Player of the Week.
The Bruins, now 19-4 and 5-1 in league play, play Saturday in a critical matchup with in-state rival Snow College. The game is scheduled to tip at 3:00 p.m. and will be available at live.ksl.com.
