TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 27, 2018) - The No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team enjoyed the comfortable surroundings of the Lifetime Activities Center last weekend, going 2-0 in a weekend tournament.
However, the Bruins will head back out this weekend once again, taking their 5-2 record away from the Wasatch Front to a three-game set that starts with a matchup against Western Wyoming on Wednesday. Salt Lake will then play against Georgia Highlands and Williston State in a tournament this weekend at the College of Southern Idaho.
Salt Lake coach
Betsy Specketer said her team enjoyed the atmosphere that comes with playing at home.
"It was great to finally play on our home floor last weekend," she said. "We were able to play lots of players and we got positive contributions from everyone."
SLCC's 2-0 record in the tourney was backed up by a big victory over Bellevue College, 70-39, and a tight victory over Casper College, 65-60.
Leichan Williams, fresh off Scenic West weekly honors last week, had a double-double in the Bellevue win.
This weekend's games at Southern Idaho will provide a stern test for the Bruins. Georgia Highlands was also nationally-ranked in the NJCAAÂ preseason polls, at No. 18, and boast a 5-2 overall record that included a five-game winning streak. Williston State has started the season at 3-3, including a recent victory over Northwest College.Â
Those teams, coupled with the game at Western Wyoming on Wednesday, will provide a firm test for Salt Lake as the weeks of preseason preparation wind down, said Specketer.
"We're getting closer to the end of the semester and we need to focus on continuing to improve," she said. "We need to finish strong prior to conference play. This will be another challenging week on the road."
Wednesday's game at Western Wyoming will start at 5:00 p.m., while Friday's game will start against Georgia Highlands will start at 5:30 p.m. in Twin Falls. Saturday's Williston State matchup will begin also start at 5:30 p.m. Salt Lake's next scheduled home game comes in a tourney starting on Friday, Dec. 7.Â
