TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 21, 2018) - The 2018-19 season has started in fine form for the No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team, with the Bruins powering to a 5-2 start to the season.
SLCC will have the opportunity to add more positive moments to a growing collection this weekend, as the Bruins host a Thanksgiving weekend tourney on Friday and Saturday featuring a mix of competition from around the region. Salt Lake will play Bellevue College on Friday and Casper College on Saturday, with the SLCC men's team playing games immediately after the women.
Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer said this weekend will be another opportunity for Salt Lake to build its resume.
"We're really excited about finally playing at home," she said. "We've had some success on the road against some quality opponents."
SLCC had an outstanding start to the week, as forward
Leichan Williams earned the Scenic West Athletic Conference's Player-of-the-Week award after leading Salt Lake to a 2-1 record in the Preseason WNIT. The Australia native is averaging 16.4 points-per-game, leading the Bruins in scoring average and rebounding with 6.7 boards-per-game.
Williams's skill-set will be a needed commodity as SLCC hosts a Bellevue team that is physical and committed to toughness on defense. The Bruins will also need a complete offensive attack against Casper College, who has started the season at 6-1. Casper is on a three-game winning streak, including a 62-53 victory over SWAC foe Snow College.
Specketer said the Bruins will need a dedicated team effort to earn victories over this weekend's opponents.
"I'm anxious to see if we can bring our success to our home floor," she said. "Both teams should definitely challenge us, especially Casper College on Saturday."
Salt Lake will play Bellevue at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and Casper at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Both games will be played inside the Lifetime Activities Center, and both will feature live stats on www.slccbruins.com.
