Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 17, 2018) - The No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team performed a rare feat in their Preseason WNIT game on Saturday.
The Bruins actually faced off against a Scenic West Athletic Conference foe in a non-conference game, playing longtime rival College of Southern Idaho. SLCC bested the Golden Eagles, rolling to a 63-56 victory to earn third place in the tournament. The victory lifts Salt Lake's preseason record to 5-2.
A big second quarter propelled the Bruins to the victory, as Salt Lake limited CSI to just 7 points to take a 34-31 lead into halftime. The Bruins stretched the lead to 50-43 entering the final period, allowing them to withstand a final charge from a fourth quarter that was full of back-and-forth.
"I'm really proud of our group and the effort they gave today, especially after yesterday's frustrating loss," SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer said. "They played so hard and showed a ton of toughness and resiliency."
Salt Lake ended up having one of their better offensive performances of the season, shooting 51.9 percent while holding Southern Idaho to 40.7 percent shooting. While the Bruins took just five free-throws in the game, they held a 40-26 advantage in points-in-the-paint.
Leichan Williams led the Bruins in scoring yet again, finishing with 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
Miki'ala Maio finished with 14 points, while
Kayla Anderson scored 17 points.
Salt Lake will have its home debut next weekend as they host several teams in the program's annual Thanksgiving weekend tournament. The Bruins will play Bellevue College on Friday and Casper College on Saturday.
