Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 15, 2018) - Anytime a team plays in a preseason tournament full of nationally-ranked opponents, there are several opportunities for highlight moments.
The No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team found one of those highlight moments Thursday afternoon, as the Bruins faced off against No. 10 Seward County Community College in the JuCo Preseason WNIT in Texas. SLCC prevailed in a 64-57 win over Seward County, using a high-scoring fourth quarter to pick up the victory and move to 4-1 on the young season.
Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer said the win is a resume-builder for SLCC so early in the season.
"This was a great team win," she said. "We had contributions from a lot of different players, which we really needed against a very good Seward County team. We made some huge stops down the stretch and made foul shots to secure it."
Salt Lake held an early 14-7 lead, thanks to holding Seward County to 18.2 percent shooting in the first quarter. SLCC would lead 22-21 at halftime, taking a two-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Bruins scored 25 points in the final period, making 14-of-26 free-throw attempts to ice out the game.Â
Miki'ala Maio led the Bruins with 18 points, while
Kayla Anderson scored 13 points and
Leichan Williams scored 12 points.
Hazel Fui scored 10 points off the bench, finishing a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.
Salt Lake will play the winner of a matchup between Odessa College and Iowa Western in the tournament semifinals tomorrow, with the winner of that game advancing to the Preseason WNIT championship game on Saturday.Â
