Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 10, 2018) - A big offensive performance early lifted the No. 17 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team to a victory, helping the Bruins finish a four-game road trip in style.
SLCC rolled to a 62-51 victory over Mesa Community College, moving to 3-1 on the young season. The Bruins scored 29 points in the first quarter, shooting 71.4 percent to power to the victory.
Bruins coach
Betsy Specketer said the game was a good performance and experience for a preseason game.
"This game was a definite grind," she said. "We had moments when we were really sharp and moments when we were really careless. Miki'ala (Maio) put us on her shoulders to finish it and the team responded to her leadership."
Offense was the story of the strong start for Salt Lake, as the Bruins made 10-of-14 shots in the first quarter. However, SLCC's offensive attack slowed from that point, with the Bruins shooting 22.2 percent in the second quarter and 18.2 percent in the third quarter.Â
Miki'ala Maio led Salt Lake with 25 points, finishing a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.
Leichan Williams also scored 10 points for SLCC.
Specketer said the win gives her team good energy heading into another week of tournaments next week.
"We'd obviously like to be 4-0, but we'll take 3-1, learn from it, and get ready for a really tough tournament next week," she said.
The Bruins will play next week in a tournament in Midland, Texas. Salt Lake will open against Seward County Community College Thursday, with games on Friday and Saturday. SLCCÂ will play at home against Bellevue College on Nov. 23, as part of the SLCCÂ Thanksgiving Tournament.Â
