Bruins run past Colorado Northwestern

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 18, 2018) - The Salt Lake Community College Bruins knew they were in for a different type of challenge Thursday.

The Bruins, after a preseason facing some of the nation's top programs, returned home to host an opponent that had yet to win a Scenic West Athletic Conference game. Salt Lake responded well to the pressure of expectation, besting Colorado Northwestern Community College 90-49 to move to 3-1 in Scenic West play and 17-4 on the season.

Salt Lake shot 55.2 percent from the field (37-67), contrasting with holding Colorado Northwestern to just 32.7 percent shooting. The shooting percentage wasn't the only stat to tell the defensive story for SLCC, as the Bruins forced 20 turnovers and scored 32 points off those turnovers.

The Bruins trailed early, 7-6, before a Kimauri Toia lay-up jumpstarted a 10-0 run that put the game out of reach. Salt Lake led 46-21 at the end of the first half.

SLCC guard Tia Hay posted another stellar performance for the Bruins, adding 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bruins in scoring. She was followed closely by Toia, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds to post the double-double. Jamaica Martin added 14 points for SLCC, while Miki'alo Maio posted 13 points.

The Bruins will have a nine-day break before their next game, which will come in the form of another road contest at USU Eastern on Sat., Jan. 27. Salt Lake's next home game is scheduled for Feb. 10, when the Bruins welcome in-state rival Snow College.
