TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 8, 2017) – The fifth-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruin women's basketball program opened the season 2-0 last week, giving both justification to the rankings and a harbinger of things to potentially come.
Â
This weekend's opportunity is all about extending that Bruin momentum, as Salt Lake prepares to play a pair of games in a tournament in Gillette, Wyoming. Last week's tournament in Wyo. ended with SLCC picking up blowout victories over both Western Wyoming and Eastern Wyoming, setting the stage for what this Salt Lake team is capable of achieving.
Â
SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer, who is attempting to lead the Bruins to another NJCAA bid this season, said the opening weekend was an impressive start for her club.
Â
"We did some really good things last weekend for this early in the season," she said.
Â
Impressive was the best adjective to describe opening weekend. The program had an average margin-of-victory of 35.5 points in the two wins, and Bruins guard
Ashley Scoggin set a school record for made-three-point shots in a game.
Â
The Bruins will have to earn an entirely new type of impressive this weekend, with a matchup against nationally recognized Sheridan College coming on Friday at 5:30. A game with home-hosting Gillette will take place on Saturday at 3:00.
Â
Specketer said the two games this weekend will provide a good base of where the Bruins are at.
Â
"This coming road trip will be a little more challenging, playing two talented Region 9 teams in Sheridan and Gillette," she said.
Â
Salt Lake will play in the JUCO WNIT in Texas next weekend, returning home to Utah for the SLCC Thanksgiving tournament the following weekend.
