Bruins prepared for tough slate in SLCC Thanksgiving tourney

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 22, 2017) – The Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team faced its first set of adversity last weekend, losing its first game in a tournament filled with national contenders.

The Bruins earned a 2-1 record in the Preseason JuCo WNIT, earning wins against Odessa College and Midland College and a loss against Trinity Valley. The first loss of the season came against a national contender on the road, taking some of the sting from the loss, but Salt Lake picked up some valuable lessons from the loss, according to SLCC coach Betsy Specketer.

Several exciting moments are in the books for the road-weary Bruins this weekend -first, they play their first home games of the season as they host the SLCC Thanksgiving Classic; second, the Bruins will have several moments for Specketer to be honored for her 500th win.

While the positives for Salt Lake will be many, the competition for SLCC will be fierce as the Bruins face off against regional rival Casper College and Western Nebraska. WNCC started the season as preseason top-25 person.

Casper has started the season strong, as the Thunderbirds are 7-1 with their only blemish coming in a tournament loss to Snow College. The Thunderbirds play two SWAC teams in Salt Lake, facing off against USU-Eastern Saturday.

In a similar fashion, Western Nebraska has also started the season in good spirits with a 6-1 record. Like the Thunderbirds, the Cougars' only loss was to College of Southern Idaho, who like SLCC and Snow figures to be a SWAC contender.

Specketer said both programs will provide good tests for her squad.

The Bruins will play Casper at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, with a game against Western Nebraska on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Tickets and live stats for both games will be available at slccbruins.com, while live streaming is available on live.ksl.com.
