Â
COOLIDGE, AZ – In a rematch of last season's NJCAA Sweet-16 where the No. 5 Central Arizona College Vaqueros came from behind to defeat the No. 10 Bruins, it was SLCC who got revenge this time with a 76-59 win.
It was all SLCC early and often as the Bruins dominated and kept the athletic Vaqueros off the boards with the two teams entering the locker room with SLCC up 35-21 at half.
With a possible rare loss at home on the horizon, CAC came out of the break with a little bit more fire, however SLCC had an answer for everything they had en route to the 17 point 76-59 win.
Arguably the stat of the game was the rebounds. Playing incredibly intense defense, SLCC held the rebounding advantage over CAC 53-45 including 18 offensive rebounds.
Leading the scoring for the night for the second straight game was
Shelby Richards (Riverton, UT) with 24 points and seven rebounds. Also, commanding the floor like a seasoned general was
Raushan Gultekin (Lund, Sweden) as she finished a perfect 9-9 from the foul line with 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals.
Playing in front of many people from her hometown of Phoenix was
Clarissa Sabedra (Phoenix, AZ) as she finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
Tanesha Daniels (Brigham City, UT) also finished with 14 points and seven rebounds as
Cassidy Whitney (American Fork, UT) chipped in seven rebounds, respectively.
With the win Head Coach
Betsy Specketer and the SLCC women's basketball team improve to 2-1 on the young season and will now travel to Phoenix to take on Mesa Community College. Tipoff is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.
