SALT LAKE CITY, UT—The SLCC Women's Basketball team (6-4) ended a four game losing streak with a home-opening victory over Gillette College (GC) (8-2) on Wednesday night at Bruin Arena.

The Bruins led for most of the first half until a buzzer-beating basket was made by GC guard Kiela Garner to give the Pronghorns a 27-26 edge at the break. Salt Lake responded by outscoring Gillette by 13 points in the second half and had three players reach double figures in scoring. SLCC used a 12-2 run in the middle stages of the second half to break open a 13 point lead.

The Bruins shot 40.3% from the field to GC's 38.6%. Both teams had 41 rebounds in the contest, with the Pronghorns earning a slight offensive rebounding advantage at 27-25. SLCC went 6-for-13 from three point range and made 12 of its 17 free throw attempts in its first true home game of 2013.

Stats vs. GC: Bruin sophomore guard Mercedes Riggs (Lindon, UT) led all scorers with 17 points and had four assists and six rebounds in the winning effort. Sophomore guard Natalie Parsons (Bountiful, UT) finished with 14 points on 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and sophomore forward Britney Johnson (Pleasant Grove, UT) added 10 points and three rebounds.

Next up for Head Coach Betsy Specketer and the Bruins is a neutral-site matchup with Williston St. College on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Coca Cola Classic hosted by the College of Southern Idaho. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. from Twin Falls, ID.
