WEST JORDAN, Utah (Tuesday, June 11, 2024)— The Salt Lake Community College baseball season ended abruptly in early May, courtesy of the Southern Nevada Coyotes. After finishing the year 40-14 overall and finishing second in the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season, two Bruins earned NJCAA All-American recognition.
Sophomore outfielder Trey Gambill was named Third-Team All-American after a superb sophomore season. He becomes the first Bruin to earn first, second, or third-team honors in more than 20 years.
The sophomore centerfielder finished the year hitting .375 while starting 53 of 54 games. The former Lone Peak Knight led the Bruins with nine home runs and 48 RBI, finishing second on the club with 13 doubles. Gambill successfully stole 16-18 bases this year and finished with a .552 on-base percentage.
Gambill will continue his baseball career at the University of Oklahoma next season.
Starting pitcher Garrison Sumner, with his impressive 1.82 ERA, which was the third-best in the country, earned honorable mention recognition. The former Westlake pitcher demonstrated his prowess on the mound, going 9-2 this season. Sumner closed the year with a 1.97 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, with opponents hitting .256 against him.
The sophomore hurler struck out 72 batters in 59.1 innings, finishing with two complete games. Sumner will continue his baseball career at BYU this fall.
Sumner is the fourth Bruin pitcher (Jordan Pace 2023, Derek Eaquinto 2022, & Dax Purser 2022) to be named All-American in the past three seasons. He joins Eaquinto, Purser, and Ernesto Lugo-Canchola as SLCC pitchers to finish the year with a Top-5 ERA in the nation.
