WEST JORDAN, Utah (Thursday, May 9, 2024)— Seventeenth-ranked Salt Lake took advantage of a pitching gem from starter Garrison Sumner, advancing to the Region 18 semifinals on Friday, May 10, with an 8-0 win over the Utah State Eastern Eagles.

Sumner retired 14 straight to end his night, striking out 13 while scattering four hits in an eight-inning complete game.

Right fielder Luke Jacobs opened the action with a single. SLCC put two runners on when Trey Gambill was hit by a pitch with one out. Catcher Ty Johnson doubled Jacobs home for the game's first run, putting two in scoring position with one down. 

Gage Easton lashed a double to right center for a two-RBI double as the second-seeded Bruins jumped on USU Eastern for a 3-0 lead. 

After Garrison Sumner twirled his second scoreless inning, left fielder Hudson Manwaring led off the bottom of the second with a single before stealing second. Jack Bluth came in as a pinch-runner after Devin Garza was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second with nobody out as the lineup turned over.

Jacobs advanced both runners with a ground out to second, leading to an RBI single from shortstop Jake Olsen. SLCC led 4-0 after two innings of play. 

After three scoreless innings, Manwaring's third hit of the night to lead off the sixth started a two-run inning. Bluth followed with a walk, and the pair executed a double steal, putting two in scoring position for Olsen. 

The freshman singled home Manwaring for his second RBI. Moments later, the Bruins manufactured their second double steal of the inning, with Bluth scoring while Olsen beat a throw to second. SLCC led 6-0 after six innings. 

After adding an insurance run in the seventh, Gambill walked off the Eagles when he singled home Jacobs from third to end the game by run rule in the eighth.
