Box Score WEST JORDAN, Utah (Saturday, May 10, 2024)— No. 17 Salt Lake scored six runs in the final two innings, but the magic ran out in extras as SWAC regular-season champ Southern Nevada pulled away for a 10-6 win in ten innings.
The Bruins scored three in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't score again with the bases loaded in a heart-breaker.
Recap
While CSN pitchers held Bruin bats at bay, the Coyotes gradually built a five-run lead before Salt Lake got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth.
Trailing 5-0, Jack Bluth led off with a triple before scoring on an E3 that allowed Luke Jacobs to reach. One batter later, Trey Gambill blasted a two-run shot to right that cut the Coyote lead to 5-3.
Southern Nevada bounced back with three hits and a run off of Dalton Smith in the top of the ninth.
SLCC showed resilience with its back against the wall.
After an error allowed Hudson Manwaring to reach, Chett Wilson singled. With two on and nobody out, Gage Easton was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jayger Baldwin pinch ran for Easton and advanced to second on a wild pitch that scored Manwaring, making it 6-4.
Bluth followed with a two-RBI single to tie the game at six. Bluth advanced to second when Jacobs flew out to left, putting the winning run in scoring position for the heart of the order. After intentionally walking Gambill, Ty Johnsen drew a base on balls to load things up for Easton Romero. The freshman from Lehi, Utah, struck out swinging to force extra innings.
Austin Taylor relieved Smith to start the tenth, but a walk, two extra-base hits, and an error allowed CSN to take a 10-6 lead and put the Bruins on the ropes.
Wilson and Bluth drew walks, but Naun Haru came in with two outs to close the door. Haru got Jacobs to fly out harmlessly, clinching Southern Nevada's Region 18 championship.
