TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Tuesday, January 30, 2024) – Sophomore Garrison Sumner was named Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after picking up the win in the No. 12 Salt Lake Bruins season opener against South Mountain Community College.

The sophomore out of Westlake HS allowed two hits and one run (unearned) in five strong innings. Sumner showed excellent control, striking out eight without walking a batter.

"He was dominant," Bruins coach Glen Spencer said of the 6'3 right-hander. 

After a pair of Bruin errors led to an unearned run in the second inning, Sumner took control in his final three frames.

"He didn't let the adversity affect him and showed everybody how to handle it. Limited the damage to one run and then dominated the next three innings."

Sumner is in his first season with SLCC after spending his freshman season across the valley, pitching in relief for the University of Utah. The Saratoga Springs native made five appearances for the Utes, logging 6.2 innings. He allowed nine hits, seven earned runs, and struck out two batters to finish with a 9.45 ERA.

The No. 12 Salt Lake Bruins won three of four games against the SMCC Cougars to open the season. 

SLCC is in Mesa, Arizona for four games at Sloan Park, the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs, for four games February 2-February 3.

The Bruins will open their home schedule at Cate Field against the College of Southern Idaho with doubleheaders on Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9.
