SLCC Baseball opens NJCAA JUCO World Series with heartbreaking loss

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 27, 2023) – The Salt Lake Community College baseball team played its first-ever NJCAA JUCO World Series game Saturday, falling in a heartbreaking defeat to No. 3 Wabash Valley.
 
SLCC lost an 9-8 game to Wabash, never trailing until the last out in the opening game of the week-long tournament in Grand Junction, Colo. The defeat drops Salt Lake to 31-19 overall.
 
The Bruins took a 4-0 lead after the third inning, with Daniel Gonzalez hitting a two-run double in the frame. Wabash Valley would later tie the game, prior to Jaxon Weatherly notching a three-run blast in the fifth inning to give SLCC the lead again. Ethan Lamb had an infield RBI single in the seventh inning. 
 
SLCC took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, prior to Wabash Valley hitting a solo home run to lead off the inning. A walk-off single ended the game in a heartbreak for the Bruins. 
 
Salt Lake will now play Sunday in an elimination game against No. 2 Johnson County. The game will be played at 7:00 p.m.
