This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of April 24, 2023

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 26, 2023) - A Scenic West Athletic Conference champion could be crowned this week in Salt Lake.

Holding a seven-game lead in the Scenic West standings, the No. 13 SLCC Softball team is just a game away from clinching the league's top spot, hosting Southern Nevada in a weekend series. SLCC Baseball will travel to in-state rival USU Eastern to conclude the regular season, while SLCC Track-and-Field will compete in both California and Idaho.

Baseball: A tough home series last weekend has dropped the Bruins back into second place in the latest Scenic West baseball standings.

As it currently sits, Salt Lake would finish with the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region 18 tournament, setting up a likely matchup with Southern Idaho or USU Eastern. The Bruins will travel to Price this weekend, after sweeping the Eagles in a series at Cate Field earlier this weekend.

Due to Community Christian canceling the remainder of its season, this will be Salt Lake's last remaining contests prior to the Region 18 tournament, which is scheduled for May 10-13.

Softball: No. 13 SLCC will continue its long homestand this weekend, facing off against an upstart Southern Nevada team.

SLCC needs to just win a single game and it will clinch the Scenic West title, giving it the top seed in the upcoming Region 18 tournament. Salt Lake earned run-rule victories in a series sweep in Las Vegas earlier this season.

"CSN always gives us good competition," said SLCC coach Cyndee Bennett. "They have some very strong hitting."

The cold weather this spring on the Wasatch Front has negatively affected SLCC's practice schedule, yet it hasn't affected many facets of their game, according to Bennett.

"I am very impressed with our defense," she stated. "For not being outside on the dirt much, our fielding percentage is high."

Track: The buildup to the upcoming NJCAA championships continues for the SLCC 'Runnin' Bruins' Track program.

Salt Lake will compete as a split squad this weekend, running both in Southern California (UC Irvine) and Idaho (Idaho State). The meets will serve as the final competition against nationally vaunted programs prior to the upcoming NJCAA meet.

Bruins coach Isaac Wood said this weekend's meets give his program a chance to self-assess.

"Idaho State provided a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to compete in a somewhat local meet and a chance for some altitude converted marks," he said. "The UC Irvine meet will be great competition at sea level to hopefully move our athletes that are on the cusp of making a faster heat at nationals into a better position."

Wood said his team's competitive edge has sharpened throughout a string of recent meets.

"One thing we are continually working on is learning how to compete all the way to the finish line," he noted. "We are constantly working on our closing speed and giving great effort."
