TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 22, 2023) - The final week of Scenic West Athletic Conference play is here for the SLCC Men's-and-Women's Basketball team.
SLCC's Scenic West finales will take place on the road this week, with games at Southern Idaho. Salt Lake Baseball will also finally open its 2023 home schedule, playing a series against Dawson Community College.

Baseball: No. 11 SLCC will finally get the opportunity to enjoy some home cooking this week, provided the weather holds up, as the Bruins will face off against Dawson Community College at Cate Field.
The improved Cate Field will host a Salt Lake team that is looking to find itself, sitting just 2-6 overall during the season, albeit against some of the nation's best programs. Dawson is a program located in Montana, playing in the MonDak Conference.
This week's games against Dawson will be SLCC's final tune-up before next week's Scenic West openers at Southern Nevada. Salt Lake will play doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday.
Men's Basketball: After a pair of competitive losses, the No. 7 Bruins will get their final crack of the season against No. 1 Southern Idaho.
SLCC has locked its spot as the league's No. 2 seed in next week's Region 18 tournament, with this week's regular season finale against Southern Idaho serving more as a likely region final preview. The Bruins have lost two games to CSI by a combined 12 points.
Salt Lake coach
Kyle Taylor said matchups with CSI are a preview of the types of teams SLCC will face in the postseason.
"It'll be an incredibly tough test for us," he said. "We already lost twice to CSI at home, and now have to go on the road to play them. They have played better than us, coached better than us, and been more disciplined than us in our first two meetings, so we have a lot to fix. They have had an incredible year so far and will be looking to cap off an undefeated regular season."
The Bruins will fall short of their goal of earning the Scenic West regular season crown and hosting the Region 18 championships. Still, Taylor noted SLCC's long-term goals are still very much in tact.
"We set a goal to win the SWAC championship, and when we lost to CSI for the second time, we realized that goal was no longer possible," he said. "For us, the first priority is to make it to 'Hutch' every year, after that it's about winning conference, region, district, and finally the national tournament.
"The reality is most of our goals aren't really fulfilled until the end of the season. This keeps our guys motivated and focused throughout the season."
Next week's Region 18 championships will be played at Southern Idaho.
Women's Basketball: The SLCC Women's Basketball team will have a stiff task ahead, facing off against one of the NJCAA's top programs in its regular season finale.
SLCC will play at No. 4 Southern Idaho this week, looking to down the Lady Golden Eagles and earn the season series with a victory. Salt Lake had a 68-65 win in December of CSI.
Bruins coach
Marcilina Grayer said this week's challenge will be critical for her team.
"The College of Southern Idaho is a fun place to play," she said. "This game will definitely be a tough match with us being 1 -1 against each other this season."
With the postseason coming next week, Grayer noted SLCC's goals remain focused on success in each-and-every game.
"We keep our goals consistent no matter the circumstances," she said. "The route we take may change or be altered, but the goal is still always the same."
