This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of January 30, 2023

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 31, 2023) – Crossover season is fully underway in the Salt Lake Community College Athletic Department.

The SLCC Men's-and-Women's Basketball teams will host home games inside the Lifetime Activities Center on Wednesday, while No. 11 SLCC Baseball will travel to the Arizona desert for a tournament. Salt Lake is in its final month of Scenic West Athletic Conference games in basketball.

Baseball: The No. 11 SLCC Baseball team had a less-than-ideal start to the 2023 season last week.

SLCC was swept in a four-game series with South Mountain, struggling with early-season rust on its offense. The Bruins will have a chance to recover this week though, playing in the 'Zinger Bat' tournament in Arizona that annually features some of the top NJCAA teams in the Southwest.

Salt Lake will open the tournament with Pima Community College and Gateway Community College on Friday.

Men's Basketball: An up-and-down week for the No. 5 SLCC Men's Basketball team ended in a loss to the nation's top-ranked team.

SLCC fell in a competitive loss to No. 1 Southern Idaho last week, falling two games behind the Golden Eagles in the Scenic West standings with just three weeks left in league play. The Bruins welcome Southern Nevada to the Lifetime Activities Center Wednesday, then travel to Southern Idaho Saturday.

Looking ahead at this week's competition, SLCC coach Kyle Taylor said the schedule provides the Bruins with a chance to refocus.

"Both of these games will be challenging for us," he said. "First up is a talented CSN team that has been playing well of late. Southern Nevada beat Snow at Snow, beat USU Eastern at home, and played CSI tough on the road as well. They have good size and length, offensive talent, and good depth on their roster. CNCC competed hard when we went down to Rangely last week, played with good energy, and created some mismatch problems."

As the postseason draws ever nearer, SLCC is in the position of still being in contention for a Region 18 title, albeit with a closing window. Looking at the opportunities his team still has, Taylor said complacency is the greatest enemy a team has this time of year.

"For our team right now, we just need to stay the course," he said. "Losses are hard and frustrating, and you have to bounce back quickly from those. We all need to take accountability for our actions and get better as a group. We need to keep learning and keep improving, as there is a lot of season left."

Women's Basketball: The last few weeks have been admittedly frustrating for the SLCC Women's Basketball team.

Some weeks, the performances are stunning and dominant; other weeks, several facets of SLCC's game are slightly off-the-mark. Still, with just three weeks left in league play, Bruins coach Marcilina Grayer noted her team knows what is ahead of itself.

"Every game from here on out will be a tough battle for us," she noted. "Region 18 is really strong on the women's side, and anyone can win on any given night. All we can do Is continue to prepare the best we can and fine-tune the minor things."
