This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of January 23, 2023

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 23, 2023) – It will be a busy week for the Salt Lake Community College Athletic Department.

SLCC's Men's-and-Women's Basketball teams will continue their Scenic West Athletic Conference jaunts, playing a road game at Colorado Northwestern on Wednesday. Both SLCC programs will then play host to nationally ranked Southern Idaho on Saturday.

What makes this week so busy is it is also the debut weeks for No. 11 SLCC Baseball and SLCC Softball. SLCC Baseball will host a four-game series against South Mountain Community College in St. George, while SLCC Softball will travel to Las Vegas for a weekend tournament. To top it off, SLCC Indoor Track-and-Field will travel to compete at the University of Washington in an indoor meet.

Men's Basketball: The No. 4 SLCC Men's Basketball team will host a critical Scenic West game this Saturday, along with playing a road game this week.

SLCC will start its week against Colorado Northwestern on Wednesday, already sitting at 1-0 this season against the Spartans. The Bruins will get a chance at revenge on Saturday against No. 1 Southern Idaho, looking to avenge an early season loss to the Golden Eagles to regain the top spot in the Scenic West standings.

Salt Lake coach Kyle Taylor said this week's games are critical for his team's season goals.

"We have a tough week with a long road trip down to CNCC on Wednesday, and then hosting CSI on Saturday," he said. "CSI is No. 1 in the country and one of only two unbeaten teams left. They are having a phenomenal year, are very well coached and super talented. They beat us at our place earlier this year, so we will have a tough test on Saturday. If we want any chance of winning the Scenic West title, we'll need to find a way on Saturday."

With Salt Lake preparing for the final month of the regular season, Taylor stated the Bruins are keeping their methods consistent.

"As we near the end of the regular season and start thinking about the post-season, I honestly don't think much changes," he said. "We shorten practices, but wouldn't say the intensity level picks up. Every day with practice our focus is on getting better. We just want to keep working and improving. That is the biggest challenge keeping the guys humble and hungry."

Women's Basketball: SLCC Women's Basketball has faced considerable adversity this season, with the Bruins having lost a pair of in-state games over the last 10 days.

Salt Lake will look to regroup this week, preparing for a road game on Wednesday with Colorado Northwestern. The Bruins will then host No. Southern Idaho on Saturday, with SLCC sitting with a 1-0 mark over the Lady Golden Eagles after a 68-65 win earlier this season.

Indoor Track-and-Field: After a pair of strong weekends at in-state meets, SLCC Indoor Track-and-Field will travel to run in Seattle at one of the West's foremost meets.

Salt Lake will travel to run in a meet hosted by the University of Washington, following up impressive performances at BYU and Weber State over the past few weeks. In the process, SLCC saw several personal records get posted in a variety of distance events.

Bruins coach Isaac Wood said his team is looking forward to the quality of competition at the Washington meet.

"I'm stoked about the chance to compete at the University of Washington Invite," he said. "We're grateful to Washington for inviting us out, and for the incredible opportunity for our student-athletes to perform at the highest level."
