Cross Country: After a strong performance a few weeks ago, the SLCC Cross Country teams will look to build on their recent success with another impressive showing in Idaho this weekend.
SLCC will travel to run in an invitational hosted by Idaho State University, facing off against some of the best NCAA programs in the Intermountain region. Continued success, as well as more training time, should bode well for the Bruins.
"We're excited about the chance to go up to Pocatello and compete at the 'Idaho State XC Invitational'," said SLCC coach
Isaac Wood. "Our men competed well head-to-head against Idaho State in our first competition, and we hope to do the same. Our women are really starting to round into form and we're excited to unleash them this Friday."
Wood also noted how his team has continued to develop ahead of schedule.
"It has been really fun to see the team really come together and become a family," said
Isaac Wood. "The team culture we have this quickly into the forming of our program is really inspiring, and a direct reflection of the leadership we have on our team."
Men's Soccer: The No. 2 Bruins have been perfect this year, at least as far as their record is concerned, and now they turn their attention towards more Scenic West play.
SLCC is a perfect 3-0 in Scenic West play and will host Southern Nevada in a match on Thursday. The Coyotes, who are currently sitting at 3-1 in league play, are in second place in the Scenic West standings.
Salt Lake coach
Mark Davis said his team is aware of the challenge CSN will bring.
"CSN is a good team that has had some good results this year," he said. "We expect a hard-fought game for the full 90 minutes.
"Our defensive organization and press have gotten better each game. Our style of play is looking more and more like SLCC Soccer each week, so we are pleased."
Volleyball: The conclusion of preseason play couldn't have gone any better for the No. 4 Bruins.
SLCC went a perfect 5-0 to end the preseason, picking up wins over both nationally ranked foes and regional rivals. Now the Bruins turn their attention toward the start of Scenic West Athletic Conference play, opening the weekend with a matchup against Southern Nevada. Salt Lake will also travel to play at No. 3 Snow College on Saturday.
Bruins coach
Shay Goulding Meurer said she is pleased with her team's progress entering this week's league opener.
"I think we are playing very good volleyball right now and our team is deep," she said. "I am confident with every athlete in every position. If one person is struggling, I know that we have someone who will come off the bench and make a difference. I have really noticed that this team is working hard to support one another in a way that helps us collectively. If we can continue to nurture the team culture we have right now, it will prove to be invaluable."
Looking ahead at Southern Nevada and Snow, Goulding Meurer said it's important for her team to focus on their own style of play.
"To be honest, we don't know much about Southern Nevada except that they always play very well against us on their home court, so we will plan to bring our best," she said. "We have had the opportunity to see Snow at a few of our preseason tournaments, and they look good and strong. It will be an exciting match-up. While we are working on a game plan, the truth of the matter is that for both matches we need to be more concerned with what we are doing on our side of the net than we are about what they are doing."
Women's Soccer: No. 4 Salt Lake is sitting at the top of the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings, a spot the Bruins want to maintain.
SLCC is 3-0 in league play, preparing to host Southern Nevada in a matchup Thursday. Coming off a week that saw the team earn national individual honors and other team accolades, SLCC coach
Cassie Ulrich said her team is looking forward to returning to league play.
Salt Lake is now on a four-match winning streak, a streak that helped the Bruins earn a win over a nationally ranked in-state foe to open league play. The twists-and-turns have been many, but the process has brought the team together, according to Ulrich.
