WEST DISTRICT PREVIEW: No. 11 SLCC Baseball to host NJCAA Western District tournament

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 17, 2022) – Being one of the NJCAA's best teams has its perks.

The greatest perk for the No. 11 Salt Lake Community College Baseball team has been playing its entire postseason in the friendly confines of Cate Field, where the Bruins walked to a Region 18 tournament title last weekend.  Now SLCC will look to keep their momentum moving forward in a hosting role in the NJCAA Division-I West Region tournament, which will begin on Thursday.

Salt Lake went 22-1 at Cate Field during the season, part of a 45-8 overall mark entering the West District tournament. The Bruins are currently riding an 11-game winning streak and earned a pair of run-rule victories in their runaway Region 18 tournament win.

SLCC coach D.G. Nelson said it is a great opportunity for his team to host the West District tournament.

"Our team has had a great season and it is a distinct privilege to host this tournament," he said. "It is exciting to have the opportunity to compete for a national tournament bid on our home field, in front of our home fans."

The West District tournament field includes Salt Lake, fellow Scenic West member Southern Idaho, Region 1 champion Central Arizona and Region 9 champion Southeast Community College (Nebraska). SLCC will open the double-elimination tournament with a 12:00 p.m. game on Thursday against Southeast.

Nelson said the strength of the tournament field is impressive.

"Anytime you're playing this late in the year, you're playing teams who know how to win," he stated. "This is a very deep tournament field, and we look forward to seeing outstanding competition at Cate Field this weekend."
