This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of February 14, 2022

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 14, 2022) – Warmer temperatures are in the near horizon for the Wasatch Front, meaning the end of winter sports is fast approaching for the Salt Lake Community College Athletic Department.

SLCC's Men's-and-Women's Basketball programs will close their regular seasons this week, albeit in a dramatic fashion for the SLCC Women's programs. The Bruins will play four games in the next six days, all leading up to Salt Lake hosting the Region 18 championships next week.

Men's Basketball: The No. 1 Bruins survived one of their closest games of the 2021-22 season last Saturday, earning a narrow win over in-state rival Snow College.

SLCC will head out on the road for one final test Wednesday in No. 23 Southern Idaho, backed up by playing Colorado Northwestern at home Saturday. The CNCC game will also be the program's 'Sophomore Day'.

Bruins coach Kyle Taylor said there is great challenge in this week's games.

"This is a big week as it's the last week of the regular season," he said. "We have two tough opponents this week, starting with CSI on Wednesday up in Twin Falls. CSI is good, they have a talented group with good athleticism, and they are well coached; it'll be a battle. We both have a lot on the line, so both teams will be fired up and prepared to play. Then we come home for 'Sophomore Night' and have CNCC. CNCC is playing well lately, and they always get hyped up to play us. They have some good individual players and when they play together as a group, they have a chance any night to upset you."

This week's games also underscore Taylor's focus on the importance of Salt Lake playing well as the postseason draws nearer.

"I don't think it's any different than any other week," he said. "You always want to win your last game and go into the next game with some momentum. You build confidence over the course of the season, not just in the final week. We want to win games this week because we want to go 1-0 every night, not because we are preparing for the Region Tournament. You want to peak in March, so this is the time of year to definitely be putting it together and starting to play good team basketball."

Women's Basketball: A marathon weekend is ahead for the SLCC Women's Basketball team, with the Bruins approaching a four games-in-six days stretch.

Salt Lake will travel to play at No. 10 Southern Idaho Wednesday, then will return home to host home games with Colorado Northwestern on Friday and Saturday. SLCC will conclude the regular season with a game against Community Christian Monday, then will rally into the Region 18 tournament.

Bruins coach Marcilina Grayer said now is the time her team needs to be playing well.
