Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 17, 2022) – A thrilling shootout victory has given the No. 10 Salt Lake Community College Women's Soccer team a chance at a national championship.
SLCC was victorious in Thursday's NJCAA Division-I Women's Soccer Semifinals in Georgia, earning a heated shootout decision over No. 1 Tyler, finishing with a 4-3 advantage in the shootout.
In a match that was even in so many ways, Salt Lake's hopes at victory came down to its goalkeeper, Theresa Wiesiolek. The native of Germany, who has earned many national and regional awards throughout the year, showcased her abilities with a trio of saves to help the Bruins fight into a shootout.
Once in the shootout, Salt Lake's Jordan Roe and Maddie Snyder both converted early, with Wiesiolek and Kenna Sparks posting goals late. Wiesiolek then successfully defended Tyler's last hope, capping off SLCC's upset victory.
Bruins coach
Cassie Ulrich said her team executed its game plan well.
"Tyler is always a very difficult team to play against, but so are we," she said. "We were incredibly organized defensively and created some really fantastic opportunities."
Salt Lake is now 15-2-1 overall with the win, along with being 8-2 in NJCAA tournament matches over the past three seasons. This was the third consecutive season that SLCC qualified for the NJCAA tournament, along with being the third time in three seasons that the Bruins played in the NJCAA semifinals. This is Salt Lake's second berth in the NJCAA championship match in 18 months, having fallen to Tyler in the Spring 2021 tournament final.
Looking ahead to Saturday's final against No. 9 Iowa Western, Ulrich said her team is looking forward to the opportunity.
"I think it's the heart of this team that's carrying us right now," she said. "We are stoked to be headed to the final."
