Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (June 7, 2021) - A prolonged weather delay couldn't stop the No. 2 Salt Lake Community College women's soccer team from finding a historic victory Monday.
For the second time in as many matches, SLCC endured a long weather delay in the NJCAA Division-I Women's Soccer Championships, earning a 1-0 win over Eastern Florida State College in the semifinals to advance to the program's first-ever national title match. The victory boosts SLCC to 15-1-1 overall, with a matchup against top-ranked Tyler looming in Tuesday's national title match.
"This is a historic night for our program and I'm very excited for our institution," said Bruins coach
Mark Davis. "Our players have humbly handled adversity with poise all season long, doing the same with tonight's weather delay. Both teams played extremely well this evening and we're excited to be advancing."
After a torrential downpour delayed SLCC's match to an 11:00 p.m. start time in Georgia, both teams struggled to find their way offensively in the first half, playing their way to a 0-0 draw at midnight/halftime. From there, the Bruins took advantage of the early-morning hours and finally broke the scoring drought with a
Hannah Lee goal in the 51st minute.
While Lee scored the lone goal in the match, SLCC goalie
Carli Jager played a critical role in Salt Lake advancing to its first-ever national title match, finishing with six saves. Eastern Florida actually held a 14-13 edge in total shots in the match, with Jager shutting down each shot-on-goal.
"Our defense has lifted us throughout the season, so it is fitting it did the same for us tonight," said Davis. "Our commitment to playing strong defense showed tonight and helped us to this victory."
Salt Lake will now attempt to get a short night of sleep before waking in advance of a 5:00 p.m. MDT national championship match with No. 1 Tyler. Tyler advanced to the title match with a 4-0 win over Scenic West member Snow College in an earlier semifinal.Â
