TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 16, 2021) - The nationally-acclaimed Salt Lake Community College volleyball team has named a familiar face as its new head coach.
Shay Goulding Meurer, who most recently has been SLCC's associate head coach, has been elevated to serve as the program's leader, effective immediately. The promotion marks a unique story in the coaching ranks, with Goulding Meurer having previously served as the program's head coach from 2003-07.
Kevin Dustin, Salt Lake's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, said Goulding Meurer will serve Salt Lake well.
"I am excited Shay has agreed to lead our volleyball program," he said. "Shay has extensive experience at the highest level of collegiate volleyball. Shay is an advocate for young women and their personal development is her number-one priority. Shay has contacts across the country and around the world, and is committed to bringing outstanding student-athletes to Salt Lake Community College. She understands SLCC and is the perfect fit for us at this time. Shay demonstrated during her year as associate head coach that she is an excellent tactician. She has been well mentored over her career and she brings a multitude of skills to the position. Shay is a leader among her peers and will add to the culture of the department."
After a coaching journey that featured leading SLCC to an NJCAA national runner-up finish in 2007, along with being the head coach at BYU, Goulding Meurer said she is excited to return to leading the Bruins.
"SLCC holds a special place in my heart," she said. "I absolutely loved my prior experience, and I am thrilled with the opportunity to be back. I look forward to building upon the winning tradition and taking us to new heights."
Goulding Meurer played collegiate volleyball for Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina as a middle blocker and outside hitter. She was named team captain and the Chanticleer's 'Most Valuable Player'.
She earned a graduate degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Motor Learning and Sport Psychology from Utah State University in 2001. She also holds an undergraduate degree in History from BYU in 1998.
"We have solid athletes returning, some fantastic recruits coming in, and terrific resources," Goulding Meurer said. "I look forward to making our presence known in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and nationally this upcoming fall season."
