Â
Sometimes victory comes in blowout wins, which the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team has experienced frequently as of late. However, sometimes they come in thrilling, late-game wins that feature a bit of thrill mixed with high-flying anxiety.
Â
SLCC experienced one of the latter wins on Tuesday, earning a close 76-73 win over Indian Hills Community College in the semifinals of the 'Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout' tournament in Arizona. Salt Lake moved to 16-0 overall, advancing to Wednesday's championship game of the tourney.
Â
After trailing 42-37 at halftime, SLCC trailed 69-63 with 4:03 remaining. However,
Jordan Brinson started a late scoring run seconds later with a layup, with Brinson then tying the game at 69-69 with 3:04 left. Brinson took the lead for good with 1:10, then Salt Lake utilized late free-throws to earn the win.
"Indian Hills is a phenomenal team," said Bruins coach
Kyle Taylor. "Hank Plona is a terrific coach. They have fantastic players. That was a war. I am really proud of our grit. We just hung around, hung around and then made big plays at the end."
Â
In spite of the win, SLCC had one of its toughest offensive performances of the season, shooting just 35 percent and going 2-of-18 from three-point range. The Bruins then went just 32-of-51 from the free-throw line. Salt Lake's defense was respectable in the win, with SLCC forcing 21 Indian Hills turnovers in the game.

"
Jordan Brinson put us on his back the last five minutes and was unbelievable," Taylor said. "Tonight was a total team effort though;Â everyone was clutch."
