No. 1 SLCC Men's Basketball earns strong win in 'Fiesta Bowl' tourney opener

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (December 27, 2021) - The No. 1 Salt Lake Community College Men's Basketball team started one of the nation's premier preseason tournaments in victorious fashion Monday.

SLCC earned a 117-80 victory over Glendale Community College in the opening game of the 'Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout' tournament. The Bruins continued forward with their undefeated record, moving to 15-0 overall with the victory.

Salt Lake coach Kyle Taylor said his team overcame the adversity of a holiday break, showcasing early momentum in the strong win.

"The first game after the break is always tough and this entire tournament will test our toughness and conditioning," he said. "We came out and were aggressive right from the start. I was impressed with how hard we played."

The Bruins played strong from the beginning, outscoring Glendale in the first half to take a 63-33 halftime lead. SLCC shot 58.5 percent in the first half (24-41), conversely limiting Glendale to just 40.5 percent shooting (15-of-37). Salt Lake was efficient in the paint, outscoring Glendale by a margin of 62-34 in points-in-the-paint. SLCC's defense also forced 26 turnovers.

Quincy McGriff finished with 28 points, hitting 10-of-14 from the field. Doctor Bradley was equally efficient off the bench, going 8-of-10 from the field to score 21 points. Marion Humphrey had 15 points, while Tanner Cuff scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

"Quincy McGriff was 'lights-out' tonight and got us started off strong with a trio of three-pointers to open things up," he said. "Doctor Bradley had another fantastic first half and we were off and running. Having eight players in double figures again was a good first game of this tournament."

Salt Lake will now advance in the winners' bracket to the semifinals of the 'Fiesta Bowl' tourney.
