TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 25, 2020) – Sitting nationally-ranked and full of momentum, the No. 20 Salt Lake Community College baseball team will open Scenic West Athletic Conference play this weekend.
After going 13-3 in the preseason, including wins over then-No. 1 Central Arizona and scoring 46 runs in four games last weekend, the Bruins will open league play with a four-game series against Colorado Northwestern Community College this weekend. The four-game series will start on Thursday.
SLCC coach D.G. Nelson said the preseason showed the potential this year's Salt Lake roster has.
"I like where we are and the direction we are going," he said. "The focus still has to be to continue to improve. We are getting outside more consistently now the weather is warming up and we are seeing the team improve at how we play the game."
The Bruins have certainly been one of the upstart stories in the Scenic West this season, with several impressive wins to their credit. Conversely, CNCC is just 1-8 on the season and is on a three-game losing streak entering this weekend's games.
In spite of their record, Nelson said the Spartans are a tough opening series for Salt Lake.
"CNCC is always tough and plays us tough on our field," he said. "They have several players from the Salt Lake Valley who always show up ready to play. It will be a good league series."
Salt Lake's four-game series with Colorado Northwestern will open with a 3:00 p.m. game on Thursday at Cate Field in West Jordan. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday with game times of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., with a series finale on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
