SLCC Baseball to open 2020 season Friday in St. George

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (January 28, 2020) – The Salt Lake Community College baseball team will open the 2020 season this weekend in St. George, beginning the season with a four-game series against South Mountain Community College.

SLCC's four-games series, which will be played at Snow Canyon High School, will feature a doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday. The four-game weekend will be followed up with consecutive tournaments before the Bruins open Scenic West Athletic Conference play on February 27.

Entering this weekend's series, Bruins coach D.G. Nelson said his team is full of energy after a strong training camp.

"This team is full of extremely athletic, really good kids that will represent SLCC the right way," he said. "I can't wait to see what this group becomes."

After a camp largely spent inside, the Bruins will get their first taste of the outdoors with the upcoming weekend in Southern Utah. While SLCC has improved its offseason training habits, Nelson still noted the learning curve that comes with returning to play outdoors.

"We have been able to arrange practicing at another facility, which has helped with more arm strength and live at-bats in a safe environment," he said. "But no matter what you do, it's not the complete game and things you learn there can only be learned outside. This group is mature and ready."

Salt Lake will begin Friday's doubleheader at 3:00 p.m., with Saturday's doubleheader slated for a 12:00 p.m. start. The Bruins are scheduled to play their first games at the renovated Cate Field on Feb. 21 against Treasure Valley Community College.
