No. 13 SLCC Volleyball prepares to bounce back in Nebraska tourney this weekend

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 19, 2019) - The No.13 Salt Lake Community College volleyball program had an inconsistent weekend in Las Vegas, falling in three-of-four matches but downing the nation's top program in their lone victory.

The inconsistency was concerning to a team like SLCC, who has aspirations of sustained success and prosperity in the upcoming Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule and beyond in the postseason. Before looking too far ahead, the Bruins' struggles were explainable due to injuries and other adversity but Salt Lake is hopeful to get back on track in a four-match tournament this weekend in Nebraska.

SLCC coach Sue Dulaney said last weekend's 1-3 record was truly a mixed bag.

"This past weekend was tough as we were not at full strength as we had three players out of action and one who was sick," she said. "Coupled with a Friday evening match versus Seward followed by a quick turnaround against Miami Dade, I think we just ran out of steam. For us to be the first team to take down the undefeated No. 1 team in the country was an indicator of what we are capable of.  We showed grit and heart."

The Bruins will face a similarly strong field in this weekend's Wyobraska tourney, spanning portions of eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. SLCC will open the tournament on Thursday with a match against Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb., followed up by a match with Northeastern Junior College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in Torrington, Wyo. Salt Lake opened the season with a 3-2 win over Northeastern and a 3-0 sweep of Western Nebraska. The Bruins will also play a nightcap with Eastern Wyoming College. SLCC will play a lone match on Saturday against Laramie County Community College, who the team has also beaten 3-0 earlier this season.

Dulaney said her program is excited for the upcoming weekend.

"This next week is our last preseason tourney and we will again see 3-of-the-4 teams that we have already competed against," she said. "It will be a good gauge to check our progress."

Salt Lake will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a home match against Western Wyoming Community College. The Bruins open Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Sept. 26 with USU Eastern at home.
