Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (May 3, 2019) - The stakes of a four-game series with the nation's eighth-ranked team weren't lost on the No. 19 Salt Lake Community College baseball team.
Yes, the Bruins knew they would get a back-and-forth series with the College of Southern Nevada and that's exactly what they got in Friday's doubleheader, falling 10-7 in game one before picking up a 5-4 victory in game two. The win means SLCC has to win just one game in Saturday's doubleheader to earn the Scenic West crown and the right to host next week's Region 18 championships.
Salt Lake and Southern Nevada will close the four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday. Live stats for the games will be available at csncoyotes.com. The start time for the day is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
Southern Nevada 10, Salt Lake 7: A back-and-forth game ultimately ended in a comeback win for the Coyotes in game one of the series.
CSN posted two early runs in the second inning before Salt Lake went on a scoring rally, posting five runs in the third inning.
Brady Brook started the scoring on an RBI double, followed up by
Gabe Singer scoring on a fielder's choice. The biggest play in the inning came on a three-run home run by
Cole Gambill, setting up Salt Lake with a 5-2 lead in the third inning.
Tanner Argyle also scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning to extend SLCC's lead to 6-2.
However, the Coyotes responded with a roar in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs to reclaim the lead for good.
Brady Brook picked up a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 9-7 but CSN posted a clinching run later in the inning to earn the victory.
Singer and
Colton Moore both went 2-of-4 at the plate to lead Salt Lake, with Gambill also picking up a trio of RBI's.
Salt Lake 5, Southern Nevada 4: In another tight game, an extra-innings rally helped the Bruins power to earn a critical victory.
Colton Moore's RBI single in the 10th inning helped SLCC prevail in the game, a game they previous led by multiple runs before Southern Nevada made a furious rally.
Ryen Edwards was the first Bruin to come through in the game, hitting an RBI single in the third inning to give SLCC an early 1-0 lead. Tied at 1-1 entering the seventh inning,
Jaxson Otis had a bunt single to help the Bruins take the lead again, followed up by a two-run double by
Tanner Argyle in the eighth inning.
While CSN tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth inning, Moore hit an RBI single to center in the 10th inning to help the Bruins claim the much-needed victory. Four different SLCC players finished with multi-hit games and Argyle had the critical RBI's. Edwards also earned the pitching win by throwing 1.2 innings of relief.
