No. 13 Bruins extend momentum, sweep Friday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 5, 2019) - The No. 13 Salt Lake Community College baseball team is riding a magical season and the number of highlighted moments keep coming in droves for the Bruins.

Take Friday, for instance; Salt Lake swept another Scenic West doubleheader to improve to a league-best 17-1. The Bruins did that by sweeping Colorado Northwestern Community College, earning an 11-1 run-rule victory in game one before following up with a 14-7 win in game two. The wins boost SLCC's overall record to 28-5, giving Salt Lake a 28-1 mark since starting the season 0-4 against nationally-ranked South Mountain.

The Bruins and Spartans will play two mores games on Saturday at Cate Field in West Jordan. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.

Salt Lake 11, Colorado Northwestern 1: SLCC jumped on CNCC early, powering to the run-rule victory that ended in the sixth inning.

Leading 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bruins posted 6 runs on the board in the inning to pick up the victory. It was a rally that started with an Alex Bumpus RBI triple and was boosted by a Tyler Dean RBI single. Bumpus also hit an RBI single in the first inning, lifting Salt Lake to the early lead, along with an RBI double in the second inning.

Bumpus had a monster game, going 4-of-4 at the plate with three RBI's and three extra-base hits. Cole Gambill went 2-of-3 at the plate as Salt Lake posted ten hits in the game. From a pitching perspective, Breck Eichelberger pitched a gem as he threw for five innings and only allowed one run while striking out two batters.

Salt Lake 14, Colorado Northwestern 7: A six-run seventh inning broke a tie and lifted Salt Lake to the victory.

Tied at 7-7, Salt Lake broke loose for six runs in the seventh inning and a single run in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. An error on the CNCC third baseman allowed two SLCC runs to score in the inning to put the game out of reach, only for the Bruins to add to the advantage by scoring runs on a balk and multiple errors.

Salt Lake jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a Gabe Singer RBI single that scored two runs, eventually stretching the lead to a Tyler Dean two-run double. CNCC tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning before Salt Lake took over.

Cole Gambill went 2-of-4 at the plate and scored three runs to lead Salt Lake, as Josh Cowden also went 2-of-4. Brad Morgan earned the pitching win for the Bruins in relief, throwing 2.2 innings while striking out four Spartans.
