TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 4, 2019) - Neither rain, snow, sleet or abundant sun seem prepared to stop the momentum of the Salt Lake Community College baseball team these days.
Fresh of a series victory over the No. 3 College of Southern Nevada Coyotes, the Bruins have risen to No. 13Â in the latest NJCAA polls and sit firmly atop the Scenic West Athletic Conference's standings with a record of 14-1 in league. Even though Salt Lake's 23-game winning streak was broken last Friday in a narrow loss to CSN, SLCC is still moving on towards the second round of play in the Scenic West and this weekend's series against Colorado Northwestern Community College.
Entering this weekend's series at Cate Field in West Jordan, Salt Lake coach D.G. Nelson said his team is excited to continue exerting their 'team-focused' baseball.
"It was fun to watch this group play solid baseball," he said. "No one had a career weekend or day; instead, we pitched and played solid defense all weekend against a good College of Southern Nevada team."
The Bruins are winning baseball games like a championship team, utilizing timely hitting, sharply-controlled pitching and solid defense in a successful formula. Salt Lake earned an extra-innings victory and a two-run victory in last week's games against Southern Nevada, also earning a victory with a late rally that ended a pitching duel. Salt Lake continues to lead the league in hitting (.349 batting average) and has one of the top pitching staffs in the Scenic West.
SLCC will have another run at the CNCC Spartans this weekend after a 4-0 series sweep against them earlier in the season. The Bruins swept Colorado Northwestern in Grand Junction in March by a combined score of 25-8, flexing their muscles early. The Spartans are 4-23 overall and 1-10 in league play. CNCC picked up its first league win in a 4-3 victory over Southern Idaho on Saturday.
Nelson said the formula for winning this weekend will be similar to what they've faced in other rounds.
"We are getting healthier each week and are looking forward to watching these guys continue to have fun and get better," he said.Â
Salt Lake and Colorado Northwestern will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday this week at Cate Field. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start, with Saturday's doubleheader scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.Â
