No. 11 SLCC Baseball travels to play Southern Idaho as Scenic West play winds down

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (April 11, 2019) - Each step in the 2019 season has been a step forward for the No. 11 Salt Lake Community College baseball team and the Bruins are hoping this weekend won't feature anything different.

Salt Lake, owners of the best record in the Scenic West with a 29-5 overall record and an 18-1 mark in league play, will travel to play one of its sternest historical foes this weekend as it travels to play the College of Southern Idaho. The Bruins are riding a streak of historic proportions as the team is on a 29-1 run since starting the season 0-4 in January.

SLCC coach D.G. Nelson said his team continues to find new ways to improve as the season continues on.

"It's really fun watching these young men take pride in their own development as well as compete every pitch," he said. "We are starting to play consistent baseball that allows us to be successful in any style of game we're in."

One of Salt Lake's more contentious series this season came from the Golden Eagles in March. A four-game series against CSI in West Jordan saw three competitive games and a game that was canceled for weather. It also included comeback wins and heroic moments from several players. The weekend likely allowed SLCC to prove itself that it was ready for nearly any situation as the Bruins gutted out several close games weeks later against then-No. 3 Southern Nevada.

A year after claiming the Region 18 championship, Southern Idaho has had an up-and-down season that has the Golden Eagles sitting with an overall mark of just 20-18 and 7-12 in the Scenic West. CSI went 1-3 in its series last weekend against the College of Southern Nevada, losing several close games down the stretch. In preview of this weekend's matchup, Salt Lake will have the advantage in team batting (.333 for SLCC; .278 for CSI) and pitching (2.81 ERA for SLCC; 4.09 ERA for CSI).

Salt Lake and Southern Idaho will play a four-game series on Friday and Saturday in Twin Falls. Friday's doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12:00 p.m. SLCC's next home series is scheduled for Apr. 19 against USU Eastern.
