TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 7, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College baseball team may have started the season slow but that doesn't indicate at all where they are now.
The Bruins are riding high on an 11-game winning streak to an 11-4 overall record and a record of 4-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Additionally, Salt Lake is preparing for its Scenic West home opener this weekend as they welcome in the College of Southern Idaho for a four-game league series.
With the momentum the Bruins have in mind, SLCC coach D.G. Nelson said his team is excited for the opportunity to host Southern Idaho.
"I really like how we pitched and played catch," he said. "We are getting better each week out at competing every pitch. I'm looking forward to seeing our progress this week."
Salt Lake dominated their league-opening series last weekend, sweeping Colorado Northwestern Community College in four games. SLCC outscored CNCC 26-8 over the series and earned a pair of league honors in response to their success.
Tyler Dean earned SWAC Player-of-the-Week, thanks to going 8-of-14 at the plate with 5 RBI's, and
Cal Beardsley earned Pitcher-of-the-Week by throwing 7 innings of no-hit, no-run ball with 9 strikeouts.
The Bruins will face off this week against the opponent who knocked them out of the NJCAA District One playoffs last season in Southern Idaho, who opened their league season at 0-4 after getting swept by Southern Nevada last weekend. The Golden Eagles are near the middle-of-the-pack in every statistical category in the league, averaging just .233 at the plate and an ERA of 3.93.
Salt Lake and Southern Idaho's four-game series will be played with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader will start at 12:00 p.m. All four games will be played at Cate Field in West Jordan.Â
