TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 28, 2019) - In the course of a regular season in college baseball, there are a variety of different macro-and-micro issues that arise.
For instance, a single at-bat can be considered a micro issue while injuries can eventually lead to a macro concern. Occasionally an issue that may seem like a micro moment can have an affect on the macro of the entire season like when the No. 17 Salt Lake Community College baseball program hosts the No. 3 College of Southern Nevada in a showdown for the Scenic West Athletic Conference lead this weekend at Cate Field in West Jordan.
The Bruins, who have risen to No. 17 in the NJCAA rankings, are tied for the Scenic West lead with Southern Nevada and both programs are currently undefeated in league play (SLCC at 11-0; CSN at 10-0). The weight of the upcoming series on the season could play a large role in determining the outcome of the 2019 season for Salt Lake.
Since opening the season by going 0-4 against nationally-ranked South Mountain, the Bruins are on a 22-game winning streak that has stretched their overall record to 22-4. The streak has included run-rule victories mixed with close finishes, showcasing SLCC's ability to win in a variety of different ways. Last week's four-game sweep of the Idaho State club team featured Salt Lake outscoring the Bengals by a margin of 56-6. SLCC's
Brody Colledge also earned Scenic West recognition for his plate success.
While the Bruins are red-hot, Southern Nevada is proving to be equally as warm as the Nevada desert sun. The Coyotes are 25-game winning streak of their own, striding into this weekend's series at Cate Field coming off a four-game sweep of USU Eastern. CSN has the league's top pitching staff (2.44 ERA) and the second-best offense (.293 batting average).Â
This is the first matchup between Salt Lake and Southern Nevada this season. The second series will close the regular season for both programs, with likely Region hosting rights on the line in the matchup as the season pushes on. Southern Idaho is third in the Scenic West standings and has a record of 3-8.
Salt Lake and Southern Nevada will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday as part of the series. Friday's doubleheader will start at 1:00 p.m. at Cate Field.Â
