TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 20, 2019) - Momentum changes everything in sports, just ask the Salt Lake Community College baseball team.
After a four-game series in January, the Bruins were down-and-out after getting swept and run-ruled against South Mountain Community College in St. George. In the midst of a long winter that made outdoor practice nearly impossible, SLCC was trying to find its playing legs quickly after the season-opening series. Looking at Salt Lake now, it's tough to imagine the Bruins are the same team. SLCC is 18-4 on the season, having gone undefeated since the season start. Most importantly, the Bruins are being recognized for their sterling start to the season with a No. 18 ranking in this week's NJCAA national polls.Â
Besides the outstanding overall record, Salt Lake is most importantly sitting at 11-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, giving the Bruins much to be thankful for as they experience an off week in the Scenic West league schedule. While SLCC will still host a four-game series against the Idaho State University club team, Bruins coach D.G. Nelson made it clear that his team still has much to learn.
"Our team is getting stronger, week-by-week," he said. "We definitely didn't play clean last weekend (in a series-sweep at USU Eastern) but competed enough to get the job done. I'm proud of them.
"Now we have a non-league series to get us ready for a quality series the following weekend."
Yes, after facing the ISU Bengals in a four-game series, Salt Lake will prepare to host a four-game series against the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes the following weekend at Cate Field in West Jordan. Both CSN and SLCC are tied atop the Scenic West standings, giving extra significance to the series that is two weeks away. Overall, SLCC's 11-0 start is over CSN's 6-0 start.
Salt Lake's four-game series with Idaho State University's club program will start with a doubleheader on Friday. Friday's first game will be played at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 12:00 p.m. All four games will be played at Cate Field in West Jordan.Â
