SLCC Baseball sweeps USU Eastern, ups win streak to 18 games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 16, 2019) - The Salt Lake Community College baseball team continued its roll through the Scenic West Athletic Conference Saturday, upping their win streak to 18-consecutive victories as the Bruins rolled to a doubleheader sweep over USU Eastern.

SLCC earned a run-rule victory of 11-0 and a 16-3 win in the doubleheader sweep, capping a 4-0 series sweep of the Eagles. With the win, SLCC improved to 18-4 and 11-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The last loss for the Bruins occurred on January 26 in St. George, with SLCC powering through opponents since then.

Salt Lake will have a week off from Scenic West play next week as they host the Idaho State University club team in a four-game series at Cate Field in West Jordan. There will be doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday next week, with Friday's doubleheader scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.

Salt Lake 11, USU Eastern 0: The Bruins scored early-and-often and never looked back in the run-rule victory.

Tyler Dean started things off with a walk and SLCC rolled on from there as Ryen Edwards hit a two-RBI single and Brody Colledge had a sacrifice-fly RBI for Salt Lake to take an early 3-0 lead. Cole Gambill hit a massive solo shot to center later in the second inning to boost SLCC's lead to 4-0.

In the top of the third, the Bruins posted three more runs as Tanner Argyle hit an RBI triple to score Dean. Argyle also had an RBI single in the fourth inning. Alex Bumpus and Jaxson Otis each scored runs in the top of the fifth inning to give SLCC an 11-0 lead. Turner Knight then closed out the inning perfectly, helping the Bruins to the run-rule victory.

Jake Wilson earned the pitching win for Salt Lake.

Salt Lake 16, USU Eastern 3: A few critical moments decided the second game of the day.

RJ Hazen had a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and allowed no runs with SLCC leading just 5-3, with the chances for USU Eastern to take the lead and put the winning streak to an end. Salt Lake took an early 4-0 lead with Jaxson Otis scoring after hitting a lead-off double.

USU Eastern eventually cut the lead to 4-3 before an infield single by Otis scored Gabe Singer. After Hazen's big pitching stop, the Bruins erupted offensively with a Josh Cowden grand slam giving SLCC an impressive lead.
