SLCC Baseball continues win streak, opens Scenic West play at 2-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (March 1, 2019) - While spring weather is certainly approaching the Wasatch Front quickly, cold weather occasionally forces Salt Lake Community College's spring teams to endure a variety of different challenges in the early parts of their seasons.

When participating in out-of-state tourneys, the Bruins are fine; when starting Scenic West Athletic Conference play, SLCC is at the mercy of the weather. The SLCC Baseball team experienced the inconsistency of weather in their Scenic West opening series against Colorado Northwestern, with the series moving to be played in Grand Junction.

Salt Lake overcame the adversity to up their winning streak to nine-straight, earning victories of 10-3 and 4-0 over Colorado Northwestern. The victories lifts Salt Lake's overall record to 9-4 and 2-0 in the Scenic West. The Bruins and Spartans will play another doubleheader on Saturday.

Salt Lake 10, Colorado Northwestern 3: A strong pitching performance, mixed with timely offense, lifted SLCC to the game one victory.

SLCC took an early 3-0 lead as Brady Brook hit an RBI double in the first inning, mixed with a Tyler Dean single. Breck Eichelberger, the reigning Scenic West pitcher-of-the-week, earned the victory by throwing 5 2/3 innings with 7 strikeouts and 2 runs.

With Eichelberger dealing on the mound, SLCC's offense powered on as Josh Cowden hit a three-run home run to right field, powering Salt Lake to a 9-2 lead. Dean had another RBI single in the sixth inning, part of a 4-of-4 performance at the plate.

Salt Lake 4, Colorado Northwestern 0: Cal Beardsley's superb pitching performance helped SLCC to a doubleheader sweep.

Beardsley threw seven complete innings of no-hit, nine-strikeout ball while only allowing three runners. Turner Knight closed out the game, leaving the SLCC staff with just 3 runs in 18 innings of play.

Offensively, the Bruins started slow by leaving the bases loaded after the first inning. Salt Lake got two runs in the fourth inning on Brady Brook and Brody Colledge RBI singles. A Tyler Dean RBI single in the eighth inning lifted SLCC to a 3-0 lead, with Gabe Singer scoring on a walk.
