TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 21, 2019) - Saturday evening, a five-year streak will either continue or end for one of the Intermountain West's premier junior college basketball programs.
The No. 20 Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team has won or shared five consecutive Scenic West Athletic Conference championships, going back to the 2013-14 season. In that time, the Bruins have captured multiple Region 18 tournament bids and made deep runs into several NJCAA tournaments. Salt Lake sits tied atop the Scenic West standings for this season with in-state rival Snow College, sitting at 8-3, entering this week's matchup against Colorado Northwestern Community College.Â
SLCC coach
Betsy Specketer said the victory over Snow was critical for her team.
"The win over Snow was so big," she said. "I wasn't sure how our team would respond after the tough loss at CSI, but I thought we came out with the energy and enthusiasm we needed to beat a really good Snow College team."
This week's matchup should be a comfortable one for Salt Lake, with the Bruins having easily defeated CNCC both times this season. SLCC earned an 83-45 victory over Colorado Northwestern early in the season in Rangely and returned home to pick up an 88-34 victory over the Spartans in their second matchup. CNCC is just 3-25 on the season and holds a record of 0-10 in league play.
Provided Salt Lake earns the victory over CNCC, they would do no worse than tie for the regular-season title with Snow. The Badgers will host the College of Southern Idaho in their league finale, a team they hold a 1-1 record against on the season. The Golden Eagles defeated Snow in their first game, 60-48, before falling in their second game. If Salt Lake and Snow tie for the regular-season title, Salt Lake would hold a 2-1 tiebreaker over the Badgers to receive the top spot in the Region 18 tournament next week in Price.
With all of that on the line, Specketer said her players are excited to finish the regular season strong at Colorado Northwestern.
Saturday's game at Colorado Northwestern will start at 3:00 p.m. The Bruins will travel to USU Eastern in Price next week for the Region 18 tournament.Â
