Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (February 14, 2018) - Love was certainly in the air for the Salt Lake Community College men's basketball team on Valentine's Night, with the Bruins loving the final result from a critical Scenic West Athletic Conference road game.
SLCC rallied to earn a 70-68 at the College of Southern Idaho Thursday, staying alive in the hopes for a top-seed in the upcoming Region 18 tournament. The win boosts Salt Lake's overall record to 19-7 and 6-4 in league play.Â
Trailing by a point late, St. John's commit
Cameron Mack hit two critical free throws to lift the Bruins to the critical victory, punctuating what was a back-and-forth game that featured 8 different lead changes. Salt Lake led for most of the game, taking a 39-34 lead at halftime after leading by as many as 11 points midway through the first half.Â
The second half proved to be a much tighter battle, with CSI clawing their way back to take a 3-point lead with just 2:59 left in regulation. The scrum for the victory ended with Mack's critical foul shots, negating a 34-31 CSI edge in the second half.Â
Mack had a game-high 26 points to lead Salt Lake, while
Josh Colon finished with 23 points. Salt Lake scored only 10 bench points in the win.Â
Salt Lake coach
Todd Phillips said the victory happened because of big plays, both offensively and defensively.
"Cameron (Mack's) foul shots to put us up late were so big," he said. "Then, we got three big stops on the last three possessions from our guys. Tonight was a complete victory for us."
The victory helps SLCC on many fronts as the Bruins are now a half-game behind CSI in the league standings and a full-game behind Snow College for the top spot. SLCC also holds a tiebreaker over CSI thanks to a 2-1 record against the Golden Eagles during the regular season.Â
SLCC will have a chance to ascend to the league's top in a critical home game Saturday against in-state rival Snow College. The game will also feature Salt Lake's annual "Sophomore Night" festivities, with a scheduled start of 5:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center.Â
